The American Red Cross WHEELS transportation program is the mass transit system for disabled individuals in Lexington-Fayette County. The program is designed to meet the needs of people with a disability that prevents them from using LexTran,  by providing economical and accessible transportation. Funding is provided by Lexington Fayette Urban County Government and the Lexington Transit Authority.

Hours of Service

Monday—Saturday    -    5:30a.m. to 12:00a.m.
Sunday - 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.


Passenger Eligibility

Fayette County residents who have a disability that prevents them from riding LexTran. The individuals’ disability must be documented on our application and include the signature of the individual’s physician or a representative of a social service agency. The application must be returned to the Red Cross and be on file in the WHEELS department prior to scheduling rides. If you are in a wheelchair and have stairs, you must have a ramp. WHEELS drivers are not responsible for getting a wheelchair passenger up and down stairs.

Trip Scheduling

Trips must be scheduled the day before, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Please have the following information ready when you schedule a trip:
Rider Number—Pickup Address—Destination Address—Time of Appointment

All pickup times are given in half-hour frames. For example, a 9:00 doctor's appointment would have an 8:00 - 8:30 pickup time.

Fare Structure

There is a charge of $1.60 per one way trip. One assistant can ride free, that person must assist. If there is room on the bus, additional people can ride with the WHEELS passenger, and will be charged a $1.60 per person. Please have the correct change.
