OUR SHINING STARS
The Bluegrass Area Chapter of the American Red Cross hosted a special volunteer reception on the 27th of August 2008. The theme of the event was “Volunteers are Shining Stars” in recognition of our volunteers who always are bright and ready when their neighbors and country need them.
Noted awards and recipients at the event were:
The Lifetime Commitment Award - Awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the Bluegrass Area Chapter over a sustained period of time. This award was presented to: COL (ret) James Alcorn, Ms Mary Cordray, the late Ms. Lois Flege, Ms. Judy Forbush, the late Ms. Garnett Gayle, Ms. Mary Agnes Melton, and LTC (ret) Art Peter III.
These volunteers have a combined total of 350 years of volunteer service to the American Red Cross.

The National Disaster Preparedness and Response Award – Awarded to an Individual who has made a major contribution in community disaster preparedness, education and readiness.
The winner of this award was chosen amongst thousands of volunteers from 136 Red Cross chapters in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. This award was presented to LTC (ret) Sam Robinson of Winchester KY.

The Navin Narayan Red Cross Scholarship - Awarded to a high school youth volunteer who has made significant humanitarian contributions to his community and has achieved academic excellence. The scholarship award was presented to Victor Yang, a senior at Dunbar High School.
