Your Donations at Work

The American Red Cross is dependent upon the generosity of the American people in order to provide our essential and lifesaving services.  All of our services are provided without regard to age, race, gender, or financial status.  Here are some examples of our costs:

  • The Bluegrass Area Chapter's Health and Safety program annually certifies over 11,000 of our friends and neighbors at a cost of approximately $225,000.
  • Service to the Armed Forces served 515 local military personnel and their families through the Bluegrass Area Chapter at an annual cost of approximately $138,000.
  • Last year, the Bluegrass Area Chapter provided over $252,000 in disaster relief services.
  • Over 59,000 hours were provided by Red Cross volunteers last year which equated to more than $1 million in donated labor.
  • The WHEELS Transportation program provides more than 120,000 rides annually to disabled Fayette County residents and delivered over 30,000 meals to home bound citizens at a cost of more than $2.3 million.
  • The most frequent disaster to which the American Red Cross responds is a single-family fire.  The Bluegrass Area Chapter spends approximately $575 per fire by providing victims with temporary shelter, food, clothing, and other basic need services.
  • A new CPR manikin used in Health and Safety courses cost $1,000 each.

A $1,000 donation could provide the following:

  • 571 comfort kits full of toiletries for disaster victims who have lost their homes.
  • 198 blankets for disaster victims who must spend the night in a shelter.
  • Clean up kits for 56 families who have flood or storm damage to their homes.
  • Groceries for up to 20 disaster victims.
  • Shoes and clothing for two families of four who lost their homes to a fire or other natural disaster.
  • Bedding supplies and linens for four families who lost their homes to a fire or other natural disaster.
  • Roof repairs for two storm-damaged homes.
  • 11,750 disaster preparedness brochures for our community so local citizens can learn how to create a family disaster plan or build a disaster supply kit.
  • First Aid and CPR training for 18 members of our community.
  • 300 hours of WHEELS transportation for the disabled.
  • Lifeguarding classes for six individuals.
  • One CPR training manikin for the Health and Safety courses.
