Volunteer Spotlight

Allie_Geiman.JPGAllie Geiman is one of the Bluegrass Area Chapter’s newest volunteers, and she also happens to be a marketing intern from the University of Kentucky .  A double major in German and Integrated Strategic Communications (public relations), Allie is scheduled to graduate in December 2009.

Allie is from Fort Thomas, Kentucky and is the oldest of 5 children.  She currently works part-time at Wal-green’s on Richmond Road.
Allie has had many unique opportunities while at the University of Kentucky including playing rugby for the UK Women’s Rugby Football Club, working as a Resident Advisor in the dorms and studying abroad for a year in Heidelberg, Germany.

In seeking a location for an internship to fulfill the requirements for her major, Allie noted, “I knew that I would have to do an internship at some point to graduate with the ISC degree, but I had no ideas about where I would want to spend an entire semester or potentially longer.  I was drawn to the Red Cross because I was attracted to non-profits and wanted to learn more about this institution that I really knew nothing about.  Needless to say, I was surprised when I found out how active they are in the community and all of the different ways they reach out to Lexington and the surrounding area.”

Currently, Allie is working on promoting the Pet First Aid Course that the chapter offers.  She noted, “I’m quickly finding out that people truly are interested in learning about the program; the task is getting the word out to those people.”  Allie has also undertaken the assignment of creating a design for the upcoming chapter fundraiser, “Ride with the Red” that takes place in May.

Overall, Allie values her Red Cross experience.  She related, “My experience at the Red Cross so far has been nothing short of pleasant.  The staff is warm, encouraging, and happy to point me in the right direction.  They are contagiously passionate about their work and have given me a worthy introduction to the organization.”
