Volunteer

One of the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is Voluntary Service.  When clients see the outstretched hand of a volunteer, they see the physical representation of the care and compassion available to them in their darkest hour.  Volunteers display the face of the American Red Cross.

American Red Cross Volunteer Facts

  • Volunteers are 95% of our chapter's workforce.
  • Over 28,000 hours were volunteered to the Bluegrass Area Chapter in FY 2008 which equated to over $500,000 in donated labor.
  • Volunteer duties are as varied as the individuals performing them.  A volunteer can be a board member, an after-hours caseworker delivering emergency military messages, an instructor for a lifesaving skills class, a disaster relief worker, or a database manager.
  • The Bluegrass Area Chapter currently has 250 active adult volunteers.
  • The Bluegrass Area Chapter also has 40 active youth volunteers.
  • The Bluegrass Area Chapter has active Red Cross Clubs and Dunbar and Henry Clay High Schools in Lexington.  They actively assist the VA Hospital and help with fire prevention preparedness and International Humanitarian Law awareness.

Megan Hendricks is a 27-year-old Lexingtonian, working as a Case Manager for children and adults with disabilities in rural Bluegrass counties.  She says, "I have been hugely rewarded by my experiences.  I was deployed to the Gulf Coast last hurricane season, and I felt greatly rewarded by what I learned about the other volunteers as well as the local survivors and their amazing strength.  It was indeed an opportunity for growth and greater understanding.  On the local level, I have had the chance to help out through an array of different activities.  I have volunteered to do manual labor, clerical work, and lots of marketing and representation.  Next, I hope to begin helping with home fire emergencies.  The Red Cross, paired with my other volunteer work, is helping me come closer to understanding myself and the world a little more with each experience."
