Would you know what to do if one of your co-workers had signs of a heart attack?  Fortunately, Mike Nieland, a Red Cross volunteer, knew exactly what to do.  By recognizing the symptoms he learned about in a First Aid/CPR class at the Bluegrass Area Chapter, Mike quickly realized that his co-worker needed immediate care to prevent a tragic outcome.  While waiting for professional help to arrive, he administered CPR and oxygen to his co-worker and was able to calm his breathing from 30 breaths per minute to just 17.  About 30 minutes later, the man suffered a massive heart attack while in the helicopter going to the hospital.  Acoording to the doctor and the nursing staff, based on the severity and the location of his heart attack, he was very lucky to have a positive outcome.  They attributed the majority of his survival and mitigated heart damage to the immediate and continuous supply of oxygen he received.  Two weeks prior to this incident, Mike was trained at the Bluegrass Area Chapter.  He says, "It was great that I had the First Aid and CPR training.  However, in this circumstance, it was extremely fortunate that I went the extra mile and got certified in Oxygen Administration, as well."  Mike's co-worker returned to work six weeks later.
