Disaster Training
Introduction to Disaster Services is the pre-requisite to every other disaster class. Some classes may have other pre-requisites, but you must have Introduction to Disaster before anything else. Sign up no later than one day prior to the scheduled date unless otherwise noted.

Working with Total Diversity This course is important because it helps us to achieve our goal of diversity among our people, programs, and services. The course will be taught with discussion, self assessments, group activities, and a simulation exercise. It focuses on the critical skills you need to be effective in working with and serving diverse communities. Working with Total Diversity is a human resources class and recommended for all volunteers, staff, and board members. Community Services Overview (formerly Mass Care) The purpose of this training is to provide basic information about the activities of the Community Services function including Feeding, Bulk Distribution and Sheltering. Participants will learn about the skills and abilities needed by Community Service workers and how to get started in this function in the local chapter. This is a basic disaster course and is required to be considered a fully trained disaster volunteer. Community Services Overview is a pre-requisite to Shelter Operations & Simulation.
Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action This course introduces disaster volunteers and other local agencies to the role of the Red Cross in the community’s actions in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies and disasters. This new, basic disaster course is strongly recommended for all disaster volunteers. It is a pre-requisite for several other courses, including Client Casework.
Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance (formerly Family Services) This course is designed to train Red Cross caseworkers to conduct effective client interviews and provide appropriate assistance to help meet a client’s immediate disaster-caused needs. Volunteers will learn to use basic forms and tools needed to provide assistance to clients, as well as making referrals when providing assistance. Client Casework replaces the Family Services: Providing Emergency Assistance course. This is a basic disaster course required to be a fully trained volunteer. Pre-requisite is Fulfilling Our Mission.
Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment This is a blended learning course consisting of two components- online (approx. 3 hours) and classroom (4 hours). Both pieces are required. The purpose of this course is to introduce the critical role of disaster assessment , explore related preparedness tasks, learn how to collect and communicate disaster assessment information, and become familiar with how disaster assessment information spports management and service delivery decisions. This is a basic disaster course and is required to be considered a fully trained disaster volunteer.

Client Assistance System (CAS) Overview For Client Caseworkers, understanding CAS is essential. CAS is the new internet-based computer system that the Red Cross is using locally and nationally to track client services. All Client Caseworkers will be required to have a basic working knowledge of CAS to travel on National assignments in the near future. This course is designed to give you the basics of the program. Psychological First Aid This session is especially for Disaster Mental Health volunteers, and was scheduled due to issues that arose during the aviation disaster in Lexington in September 2006. Bob Hayes, interim Executive Director for the Hoosier Heartland Chapter in IN, will be leading this session to talk about over-identification and other issues raised by our DMHS after the aviation incident. Shelter Operations The purpose of this course is to prepare staff and volunteers to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team, to meet the needs of people displaced as a result of disaster. Community Services Overview is a pre-requisite to this course, and Shelter Operations is a prerequisite to Shelter Simulations. This is a basic disaster course and is required to be considered a fully trained disaster volunteer.
Shelter Simulation The purpose of this training is to provide participants an opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needed to run successful shelter operations. Prerequisite to this course is Community Services Overview, & Shelter Operations. This is a basic disaster course and is required to be considered a fully trained disaster volunteer.
Weapons of Mass Destruction/Terrorism The purpose of this course is to provide basic information about the issues and safety concerns in performing our work in an environment involving a WMD/T incident. Participants will learn about the skills, abilities, and knowledge needed by disaster workers performing duties in this environment. This is a basic disaster course.
ERV: Ready, Set, Roll, Defensive Driving, and Road Test The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross paid and volunteer staff to safely and effectively use an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and its equipment to meet feeding and other service needs of the people affected by disaster. This is a basic disaster course. Required are a valid driver’s license, satisfactory Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) report, completion of Intro to Disaster and Community Services Overview courses. Defensive driving course may also be required at another time. This course is dependent on the chapter ERV being at the chapter. The course will be rescheduled if the ERV is out traveling.
