Being prepared for emergencies is crucial at home, school, work and in your community.
Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood, workplace or school or can confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services – water, gas, electricity or telephones – were cut off?
Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone right away. The best way to make you and your family safer is to be prepared before disaster strikes. We encourage you to:
- Get Informed
- Make a Plan
- Get a Kit
- Maintain Your Plan and Kit
Your plan and kit should have enough resources to last for up to three days in case you are confined to your home or stranded away from home. For more information about what how to make a plan, or what to put in your kit, take the Pledge to Prepare below.

Sesame Street's Let's Get Ready! Planning Together for Emergencies Kit
The Sesame Workshop worked with the American Red Cross, the National Head Start Program, and the Department of Homeland Security to develop the Let's Get Ready! Planning Together for Emergencies initiative. The initiative highlights the critical need to address emergency preparedness as an essential aspect of all children's development and well-being. The target audience for the Let's Get Ready! Planning Together for Emergencies Kit is children ages 3-5 and their parents and caregivers.
